Do you want a complete guide for using a globe valve, gate valve, or vice versa? If so, you are on the right site. In this post, you will learn the difference between the gate and globe valves.

Both play a significant role in industrial services. They may have similar designs or structures but may have different functions. Read more and explore the unique characteristics and differences between the two valves.

The distinction between a Gate Valve and a Globe Valve

Before setting valves for your business, you should know the critical difference between a gate valve and a globe valve. The structure of globe valves is designed to handle the flow up through the bottom of the disc and the seat ring. This controls the assembly of debris and dirt on the disc.

Gate valve is used to open or close flow but can’t regulate the flow level. Their design is according to connect or isolate liquids. They have features from how they work, with a gate sliding among the seats of the valve at a right angle to the fluid flow

    Globe Valve

Globe valves are a particular type of valve used for regulation or handling of liquid in pipelines system. This linear motion valve moves the closure component on and off the seat. The closure member is known as a disc in its structure. The valve seat’s opening differs in direct proportion to the journey of the disc.

It is also an isolation valve to regulate the liquid flow from the opening position. In contrast, gate valves are designed for either the opened or closed position.

Before selecting a valve, careful consideration for on-off isolation service. Because holding a tight seal to the strong force moving up on the disc is difficult. The globe valve reached a short stem journey between the open and closed positions and is easier to repair.

    Globe valve Working

Globe valves are operated to adjust, start, stop, and control the flow of liquid media. Their names come according to the design and structure of the valve body. In function, a cone-shaped plug moves in inward or outward for the flow of fluid. You should be careful not to turn the valve shaft too far, affecting the seating.

The seal of globe valves is generally better than gate valves and lasts for a long time. They may be more expensive than sized gate valves but may be worth where throttling is needed. Because of its structure, the globe valve offers a tight seal with fewer chances of leakage.

The cores of the gate valve are parallel to the liquid flow and decrease seat erosion when the valve is on. This unique feature makes the globe valve a great throttling valve. Globe valves are suitable for working where leakage and safety are the top concerns.

    Gate Valve

A gate valve is suitable for the water supply system. The gate valve comes in different shapes, like a knife, wedge, or parallel. When opened, the valves look higher than globe valves but have less face-to-face length. They have small liquid flow resistance while open and low-pressure drops. So that the gate valves are flatter to this and seat wear than globe valves.

    Gate valve Working

The gate valve design is used to adjust fluid in the pipeline system. The shape of the gate is different. They may be rectangular, circular, or plate-shaped when the wheel handles move clockwise. The steam moves in a lower or downward direction. You can’t see any liquid leakage when the valve is closed entirely.

When the wheel handle moves in an anticlockwise direction, steam moves upward. The valve is opened position and allows fluid flow through the Gate valve. At that time, the gate allows meager resistance to the flow of any field. The half-opening situation is not good because it creates noise and erosion when liquid strikes.

Installation of gate valve vs. globe valve

    Gate Valve

The gate valve is installed in different directions, but a globe valve goes only in one direction. Gate valves should be installed where the valve can easily be opened or closed with no risk of distorting. The valve should be connected to the line with a wedge in a close situation. If you leave the valve half open, it will cause leaking. Make sure the valve has two directional capacities. If the valve has one directional ability, ensure it is installed with proper orientation.

    Globe Valve

Before installing the glob valve, follow some standard safety procedures. It is installed with the inlet below the valve seat for throttling service. Globe valve installed in such a way the flow enters over the top of the seat and goes down via it. The suggested direction of the globe valve is upright. It is installed in other directions, such as vertical directions. Upside installation is not recommended because it will accumulate dirt in the bonnet.

    Performance difference

The globe valve can be used for the regulation of liquid flow and also for cutoff flow. The globe valve fluid resistance is more significant and easy to open or close. But the distance between the sealing surface and the valve plate is short, and the opening or closing stroke is also quick. The gate valve can be fully open or closed. When it fully opens, the flow resistance in the valve body is zero.

Why are the working principles of globe valves and gate valves?

A globe valve is considered a movable disk and a stationary ring seat with a spherical body. The globe valve seat is in the center and parallel to the pipe, and the space in the seat is closed off with the disk. When the wheel handle is turned, a disc is lowered or raised by the working of the valve stem. The disc is fully expanded, and the fluid flow is at its most rates. When the disc is fully reduced, the fluid flow is shut off.

    Working principle

The globe opens or closes in the ring-like system. That is to say, rotating the wheel hand will turn and lift together with the valve stem. Whereas in the gate valve, the wheel hand is the one so that the valve stem can rise and fall, and the position of the hand wheel itself is not changed.

Flow rates of gate vale needed to be fully open or closed, while globe valves do not need. There are specified inlet and outlet directions for globe valves, but the gate valve has no conditions for inlet and outlet. Moreover, the gate valve has two conditions complete closing or opening. The globe’s valve plate motion stroke is too small, and the globe valve is stopped at a specific situation in the liquid flow. While the gate valve can only be used for cutting off and has no other parts.

Why is the sealing valve core of the gate valve not?

The sealing surface of the globe valve is a small trapezoidal side of the valve core (generally, the design of the valve core). If the valve core is detached once, it equals the valve closing. If the pressure is enormous, the sealing performance will not be good. The gate valve is packed from the side of the valve core, and the packing has not had as good an effect as the globe valve. In the gat valve, the valve core falling off is not equal to closing like a globe valve.

What is the difference between the flow direction of the globe valve and the gate valve?

The gate valve and globe flow are the same in both directions. There is no need for an inward or outward direction, and the medium can flow in both directions. Globe valves can be used for stop, start, or regulation of flow in case of the unavailability of gate valves. At the same time, the gate valve is commonly used for isolation purposes.

A gate valve is not created to regulate flow; as a result, we observe vibration, noise, and seat/disk damage in gate valves. At the same time, the Gate valve can be used in both directions as designs are available for both directions of flow.

    Key Differences

    • The globe valve has a flow direction usually indicated on it and is used in compliance with that.
    • The disk and seat’s opening and closing valve geometry also differ between the globe and gate valves.
    • The gate valve is more complex in structure than the globe valve.
    • Gate valves are divided into dark rods and open rods, but globe valves do not.

    Summary

We hope you feel better understanding after reading this post. You learned the differences between globe and gate valves in this article. The gate valve is used for isolation, while the globe valve is used for liquid regulations. There may be a slight difference in their shape, design, or flow regulations. Gate valves are suitable where low-pressure drops, but globes are suitable where high pressure occurs if you have any questions feel free to contact us.
